When experts discuss the use of cannabis for sleep, they often refer to the effects of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). This is the main compound that most people associate with the high after smoking cannabis. THC has numerous side effects, including worsening anxiety symptoms for some people, which could impact someone’s ability to fall asleep. 

Evidence suggests short-term cannabis use may increase the time spent in deep sleep, helping you wake up feeling refreshed. Unfortunately, researchers also discovered that THC decreases the length of time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During this time, people dream, process emotions, and store memories. A reduction in REM sleep may benefit those with PTSD who experience nightmares. However, long-term exposure to THC may disrupt this crucial stage of sleep for people without this condition. 

The relationship between THC and sleep is a gray area, so many people turn to CBD (cannabidiol) instead. Unlike THC, CBD is praised as a non-intoxicating cannabis compound, meaning it won’t get you high. In fact, despite coming from the same plant, these two compounds couldn’t be more different.

What Does the Research Reveal About Using CBD for Sleep?

The research on CBD and sleep is promising. So far, it displays few side effects for users, as we’ll reveal later in this article. Very early studies suggest that CBD has a calming effect which may improve the quality of your sleep and the number of hours you sleep.

However, it’s the following research that highlights CBD’s most significant potential as a sleep aid. CBD may address the causes of poor sleep, including symptoms of pain, inflammation, and anxiety. In the next few sections, we’ll explore how this research helps us understand the link between CBD and sleep, including the ways it might improve rest.

Does CBD Help Sleep Duration?

Many people struggle to get enough sleep. That’s why, in 2012, researchers compared a placebo with 160 milligrams (mg) of CBD to identify how it affected sleep. The study revealed this CBD dosage actually increased sleep duration in participants.  

A later 2014 study then investigated if CBD affects the body’s sleep cycle, specifically the potential impact of CBD for sleep in four people with Parkinson’s disease. Researchers reported that CBD helped reduce symptoms associated with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). This condition causes people to act out their dreams, causing those with this medical condition to have poor sleep and nightmares. In fact, another review from 2014 reported similar findings, suggesting that CBD may aid RBD treatment and excessive daytime sleepiness. 

Studies Show CBD May Reduce Anxiety Symptoms

It’s totally understandable that some guys don’t like to admit when they're feeling irritated or on edge. We sure as hell don’t we’re men dammit!  For many people, it’s easier to pretend those feelings don’t exist until they creep back up on you and stop you from getting to sleep. People who experience symptoms of anxiety often report sleep struggles alongside it. Together, these two can impact your physical and mental state, preventing you from performing your best in your day-to-day life. Luckily, the experts investigated a possible link between anxiety, sleep, and CBD. What they discovered was awesome.

In 2019, scientists wanted to understand if CBD could improve anxiety and sleep. For context, in the final stage of this experiment, there were 72 adults with anxiety concerns. The CBD dosage ranged between 25 mg and 175 mg. Here’s what they found:

  • 79.2% of patients had lowered anxiety scores within the first month, with these scores remaining reduced throughout the study. 
  • After one month, 66.7% of patients reported having better sleep scores, and 25% had worse sleep. 
  • The report indicates that 25mg was an effective dose for those struggling with anxiety. However, the ideal CBD dosage for sleep issues seemed to be much higher, correlating with findings from other clinical trials.
  • Unlike THC, which has numerous unwanted side effects, this case study highlighted that CBD was well tolerated in all but three participants.

The research from 2019 was a significant finding for the Cannabis industry as it showed CBD has the potential to reduce symptoms of anxiety and improve sleep with minimal adverse effects. 

How CBD, Cortisol, and Sleep Affect Each Other

Everyone gets stressed from time to time. It’s a part of being human. Although, the chemicals associated with stress can have some adverse effects over time. 

When humans experience stress, the body releases a chemical called cortisol. Also known as the stress hormone, cortisol levels usually peak in the morning. However, those suffering from the common sleep disorder, insomnia, typically have higher levels of cortisol during the night. There are a variety of factors that may cause insomnia and the release of cortisol, but research shows the two are connected. 

In fact, high cortisol levels before bed may increase the number of times someone wakes up during the night. Although this research was independent of insomnia, it highlights the impact of stress on our natural sleep clock. 

Researchers started asking, does CBD lower cortisol and ease stress? Interestingly, during one study, they administered a dose of 300 or 600mg of CBD to participants. They found that with CBD, cortisol levels significantly dropped, suggesting CBD might influence the release of the stress hormone or act as a mild sedative.

What does this all mean for CBD products, like Cannadips? In short, more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between CBD and sleep.
